Discipleship and Inner-City Youth

Discipleship among inner-city children who’ve trusted Christ can be extremely difficult for several reasons.

One, most kids come from single-parent, low-income homes. Two, they live in neighborhoods filled with poverty, drugs, gangs & violence. Three, we only have them for a few hours daily. Four, most low-income families tend to be transient.

Last September, a counselor and 5 boys began a discipleship class that met once a week to pray, read from a book together and encourage each other to walk with God.

Although this discipleship program took 9 months to complete, all 3 boys from broken homes: Mykel (16), Jerenis (15) & Antonio (14) never missed a week! Mykel says the discipleship class helps him to “pray more and cuss less” and keeps him out of gangs.
