Sober Minded

Unapproachable, uncooperative, unloving—words once used to describe Beverley.  Alcohol had consumed her life. But those days are over. Now, she’s sober, stable, and Spirit-filled.

A British transplant from Suffolk, Beverley married an American serviceman and moved to the U.S. in 1990. Struggling with homesickness and a troubled marriage, she turned to alcohol for comfort. When her husband called for a divorce, while she was in England caring for her sick father, she returned, hoping to save her marriage—but to no avail. She started a daycare to make ends meet but gave it up, fearing her alcoholism put children at risk.

For 20 years, addiction controlled her life. “I lost my home, my family—I lost everything,” she said. At her daughter’s urging, she joined a women’s substance abuse group, where she met the future director of Recovering LIFE, a faith-based recovery program for women that began meeting weekly on the Good News campus in 2024.

Through Recovering LIFE and her renewed faith, Beverley quit drinking and recommitted her life to Christ. As a symbolic act, she placed her last empty beer can in a tree near a liquor store—later replacing it with a cross.

Now 63 and a decade sober, she has rebuilt relationships with her three children and seven grandchildren. She has her own home and spends her time giving back by distributing food and necessities to the homeless. Beverly has also been extremely blessed to be able to lead her son to Christ.

“I love coming to Recovering LIFE because it helps me stay focused,” she said. “You never know who you’re going to bump into who needs help.”
